January 27, 2015

On March 3 Bismeaux Records will release a special new album from Asleep at the Wheel. On Still the King: Celebrating the Music of Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys, Asleep at the Wheel is joined by a variety of musicians to honor the Western swing sound popularized by Willis and his group. The forthcoming album (which is available for pre-order via PledgeMusic and iTunes) feature guest appearances by such artists as: Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, George Strait, Amos Lee, Old Crow Medicine Show, Brad Paisley, Jamey Johnson, Lyle Lovett, Kat Edmonson, Robert Earl Keen and Tommy Emmanuel.

Today we premiere a version of “The Girl I Left Behind Me” with The Avett Brothers. Asleep at the Wheel’s Ray Benson explains to Relix, “The Avetts have been doin’ the song for a year or so when they toured with Old Crow Medicine show, I believe. So, when they came in the studio they were primed and ready to roll. We added me on the guitar, Eddie on the steel and Emily on piano and the result is a joyous romp with hilarious lyrics! We recorded live in the studio, so we could capture the energy of everyone singing and playing together.”
