Guster: Evermotion
Mostly known for their populist appeal and ambitious intents, Guster takes a decided directional turn with Evermotion, finding focus in a softer sound and cooing, uncomplicated melodies. Sidelining, at least temporarily, their organic-pop sensibilities, the new album finds singer Ryan Miller’s hazy, beguiling delivery lulling listeners into a state of dreamy repose that’s as soothing as it is satisfying. Indeed, the quiet, shimmering tones of “Long Night,” “Doin’ It By Myself,” “Endlessly,” “Expectation” and “Gangway”—the latter complete with an accompanying chorus of “la-la-las”—suggest that Guster is content to take things at a much gentler pace. Its title aside, the alluring Evermotion often meanders along, and even the psychedelic lilt of “Lazy Love” and the kinetic pull of “Simple Machine” don’t disrupt that amiable ambiance. Consider Evermotion a relaxed and reassuring Sunday-morning record, a reservoir of tranquil tones for anyone in need of a relaxing respite.
