Last night, Tedeschi Trucks Band returned to the Beacon Theatre for the fifth installment of their ongoing venue-specific residency, which included guest slots extended to Wilco’s Nels Cline and Future Soul producer, Mike Elizondo. Prior to their arrival on the fabled Big Apple stage, husband and wife Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks spent part of Tuesday at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, where they performed a short set as part of the PBS series “The Art of Music,” which also provided a window for Tedeschi to play Mississippi John Hurt’s 1955 Gibson acoustic J-50 from The Met’s guitar collection.

Beginning with the two-some’s time at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Trucks and Tedeschi engaged in a conversation with Rolling Stones’ David Fricke, before pressing into five movements. For the musical aspect of their appearance, the pair leaned into Derek and the Dominos’ “Bell Bottom Blues,” followed by Future Soul track, “What in the World.” Next, Tedeschi used Mississippi John Hurt’s guitar and gave a demonstration via Sippie Wallace’s “Women Be Wise.” Before ending their museum visit, the duo provided another glimpse at their forthcoming LP, on “Who Am I.”

During last night’s big band return to The Beacon stage, the group went with a heavy offering of covers amongst choice originals, including “Hear My Dear” and “Fall In.” The first cover took shape as Junior Wells’ “Little By Little,” followed by pieces of their own catalog. A take on Dylan’s “Down in the Flood” arrived ahead of an instrumental back-and-forth between Isaac Eady and Kebbi Williams. For their next move, Future Soul producer Mike Elizondo helped perform a piece off the set, “Hero,” just days out from the March 20 release.

Following Elizondo’s stage time, the band delivered a covers-heavy concert segment that included Dylan’s “Tangled Up in Blue,” Blind Faith’s “Had to Cry Today,” a break in the trend for their own “Soul Sweet Song” before resuming the motif via Elmore James’ “The Sky Is Crying.” Tedeschi led her own “Looking for Answers” before the evening’s second guest, Nels Cline, joined for the frame’s final features, a jam-edged sequence of The Rolling Stones’ “Loving Cup” > Sleepy John Estes’ “Leaving Trunk” > Rahsaan Roland Kirk’s “Volunteered Slavery.”

For the night’s encore, Tedeschi Trucks Band struck up Matthew Moore’s “Space Captain.” Tickets are sold out for Friday’s concert, which will coincide with the March 20 release of their sixth studio LP, Future Soul
