Seun Kuti and Damian Marley Tap Gaudi and Big Audio Dynamite’s Don Letts for “Dey” Dub Remix
Today, Nov. 6, Seun Kuti and Damian Marley celebrate their triumphant collaboration “Dey” with a new extended dub mix. Originally released on Oct. 4 as part of Kuti & Egypt 80’s fresh studio collection Heavier Yet (Lays The Crownless Head), executive produced by Lenny Kravitz, the standout track is refreshed today by a remix from iconic reggae and dub producer Gaudi and Big Audio Dynamite’s legendary Don Letts.
The top-tier pair lend their talents to an intricate reworking of Kuti and Marley’s booming afrobeat anthem. Complete with deep reverb and a dampened, bass-forward arrangement, Gaudi and Letts’ treatment is laid back and hypnotic, maintaining the upbeat tempo of the original but finding open spaces and instrumental passages between potent lines punctuated by dub echoes. Each listen unfurls another detail, from the clipped percussion snaps to subtle organ stings. This is the product of masters at work.
Kuti & Egypt 80 will continue to herald the arrival of Heavier Yet (Lays The Crownless Head) with an ongoing World Tour, which will bring the band to 21 further stops through a finale at Antwerp, Belgium’s Winterfuse on Dec. 14. The group will appear next at Leverkusen, Germany’s Leverkusener Jazztage on Nov. 11. For tickets and more information, visit seunkutimusic.com.
