Late last week, boygenius took part in an intimate gig at The Smell in Los Angeles, performing two acoustic sets on Thursday, Feb. 1. During the night, the band reportedly told the audience that they would be “going away for the foreseeable future.” Following the initial report shared by Pitchfork, the band’s representatives confirmed the news to the online music publication.

Interestingly, the supergroup, comprised of Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Ducas, launched and supported a series of brand collaborations on the same day as their aforementioned acoustic show, including a partnership with Gretsch Guitar, a handbag with Baggu and jewelry company, Catbird NYC.

Notably, boygenius was formed in 2018, releasing their debut self-titled EP the same year. To follow, each player focused on independent solo endeavors: Bridgers’ Punisher, Baker’s Little Oblivions, and Dacus’ Home Videos. The band reunited in 2023, producing their first full-length album, the record, and continuing with a paired EP, The Rest

Following news of the band’s expected break from form, they will appear at the 66th annual Grammy Awards tonight, Sunday, Feb. 4, where they are nominated for five awards, including Best Alternative Music Album for the record, Best Rock Performance for “Not Strong Enough,” Record of The Year for “Not Strong Enough,” Best Alternative Music Performance for “Cool About It” and Album of The Year for the record.
