Yesterday, the music world was struck with the news of the untimely passing of Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor at the age of 56. In the wake of the loss, P!NK took the stage for a concert at Cincinnati’s Great American Ball Park. The Summer Carnival Tour stop featured an emotional moment when Brandi Carlile, who had opened the show, returned on stage to join P!nk for a poignant rendition of the recently departed singer’s 1990 cover of “Nothing Compares 2 U.”
According to Billboard, as the night unfolded, P!NK took a moment to address the audience before welcoming Carlile on stage. She said, “When I was a little girl, my mom grew up in Atlantic City, and I used to go down to the Ocean City Boardwalk with my ten dollars, and I would make a demo tape… I would make a little cassette tape and imagine it was my demo for the record company,” P!nk told the crowd while standing center stage with piano player Jason Chapman as a hush came over the sold-out baseball stadium. And it would always be either ‘Greatest Love of All’ by Whitney Houston or ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ by Sinead O’Connor. So in honor of Sinead, and in honor of my very, very talented friend Brandi Carlile, I asked her if she would come out here and sing this song with me.”
With heartfelt emotions, Carlile emerged, and the two powerhouse vocalists delivered a mesmerizing rendition of “Nothing Compares 2 U.” Originally penned by the legendary Prince, O’Connor immortalized the song on her second album, I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got. The single soared to the top of the charts worldwide and played a pivotal role in establishing O’Connor as a global sensation.
During the powerful performance P!NK and Carlile poured their hearts into the song, paying tribute to the immense talent and legacy of O’Connor.
