Last night, Jackson Browne took his current tour to Richmond, Va., for a one-night stand at the Altria Theater. Midway through the first set, the musician welcomed legendary pianist Bruce Hornsby to the stage to assist on a tour debut of Browne’s 1993 title track, “I’m Alive.” Then, after delivering a second set filled with fan favorites, Hornsby joined on a set of songs during the evening’s first round of encores.

The Tuesday night affair got underway with Browne’s highest charting single of his career, 1982’s “Somebody’s Baby,” followed by “The Barricades of Heaven.” Then, the musician visited his 2014 repertoire on “The Long Way Around” before moving into “Downhill From Everywhere.”

Next, Browne surprised the audience by bringing out Hornsby to assist on “I’m Alive.” The show continued with Browne and his band taking on a track off 1974’s Late for the Sky, “Fountain of Sorrow.” Next, they launched into “Rock Me on the Water” before digging into “In the Shape of a Heart.” “Before the Deluge” came next, before the band moved into their set ender, a cover of Little Steven’s “I Am a Patriot.”

Browne’s second set kicked off with “You Love the Thunder” from the 1977 album, Running on Empty. Then, they moved through a trio of songs off 2021’s Downhill from Everywhere, including “The Dreamer,” “A Little Soon to Say,” and “Until Justice Is Real.” Next, Brown dipped back in time on “ For a Dancer” before performing his seminal track, “These Days.”

The second set continued with “Redneck Friend” and the fan favorite, “Doctor My Eyes.” Then, the band played the title track off the 1973 LP, Late for the Sky. Another classic came next: Browne performed “The Pretender” before concluding the set with a high-energy take on “Running on Empty.”

For the night’s first encore, Hornsby reemerged to lend his talents to the Eagles’ hit, “Take It Easy,” which Browne co-wrote with Glenn Frey in 1972.  Hornsby stuck around for the final song of the first encore, 1971’s “Our Lady of the Well.” For the second encore, Browne and his band delivered “The Load Out” and capped the night with a take on Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs’ “Stay.”

After last night’s performance, Browne will continue his run tonight at Filene Center at Wolf Trap in Vienna, Va., before traveling to Baltimore for a one-night stand at Pier Six Concert Pavilion on July 22. To purchase tickets for Browne’s forthcoming concerts, visit jacksonbrowne.com
