Video Premiere: Oteil Burbridge – “Superhighway” (Neal Casal Tribute)
Oteil Burbridge has released the video for “Superhighway,” the latest to be shared from the 41-track tribute album Highway Butterfly: The Songs Of Neal Casal. The recording features Burbridge on bass and vocals and has assistance from Steve Kimock on guitar, Duane Trucks on drums, John Morgan Kimock handling percussion, and Nick Johnson on guitar.
“Superhighway” was originally released on the late Neal Casal’s 2009 solo album Roots & Wings and the reimagining of the track by Burbridge and company highlights the pristine intention of Casal’s lyrical and musical arrangement – furthering his enduring impact as an artist. Burbridge crisply sings “Come on down that river and blow my mind/ Through the day/ Most every night/ These days I’ve been running a little behind/ But for now/ We’re right on time.” The video for “Superhighway” was directed by Justin Kreutzmann who captured the performance of the track at Skull & Roses Festival earlier this year.
“It was my pleasure and my honor to be part of the Highway Butterfly album. After recording Neal’s song “Superhighway” for the tribute, it made its way into my live sets,” Burbridge told Relix. “When Justin Kreutzmann called me about doing the video for the song, I was most happy to do it. It was so good to see Justin again after the pandemic and the Skull & Roses scene not far from where Neal resided was the perfect atmosphere for the video.”
Burbridge’s addition follows tribute recordings and videos for Casal by Billy Strings, Jaime Wyatt, Jimmy Herring, Arron Lee Tasjan, Marcus King and Eric Krasno. Like the rest of the Neal Casal tribute collection, the recording was produced by Dave Schools and Jim Scott and was released on 3-CDs, 5-LPs and digital formats. Though physical versions of the album have sold out it is still available for streaming and download. All proceeds from streams and sales go to the benefit of the Neal Casal Music Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit formed in 2020, which helps provide musical instruments and lessons to students in New Jersey and New York state schools where Casal was born and raised. The Neal Casal Music Foundation also donates proceeds to mental health organizations that support musicians including Backline and Musicares.
