Phish Breeds Sewer Rat

July 16, 2010

After the June 22 Phish show at Great Woods in Mansfield, Mass., 31-year-old Barton Gray pulled a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles move and retreated into the sewers for two days in an attempt to escape from police.

Gray was selling nitrous oxide in the parking lot of a nearby Red Roof Inn (Check out the lengthy story on the nitrous mafia from last week).

When confronted by the police, Gray began throwing rocks at them. Despite being partially Tasered, he was able to scale a fence and run into the nearby woods next to the hotel. Cops set up barriers at nearby roads and thoroughly searched the area for Gray to no avail.

Gray eluded capture by descending into the sewers where he was lost for two days. Apparently, most of the pipes in the sewer system are only two feet wide and he was unable to turn around.

On June 25, Gray found a manhole cover in the parking lot of a Stop & Shop, which he attempted to open. The manager of the Stop & Shop helped him out and then later called the police to report an intoxicated man on the property. The policeman who responded to the call reports that Gray was extremely disheveled, dirty, and speaking nonsense.

Gray was taken to a local hospital, where he was later connected to the incident at the Red Roof Inn two days earlier. Police did not press charges. For a full report, check out The Wicked Local Blog.
