On Tuesday night Jackie Greene was among the performers who celebrated Bob Weir’s 65th birthday with a surprise party at Weir’s recently reopened Mill Valley, CA club Sweetwater. About 100 of Weir’s friends attended the event, including Phil Lesh and Weir’s neighbor and pal Sammy Hagar (who will join Weir at Sweetwater for a benefit performance on Friday with The Mooncussers).

The birthday show featured three segments of music. Greene and his band performed first, offering a set of mostly Grateful Dead chestnuts like ‘Bertha,’ ‘Deal’ and ‘Shakedown Street’ with the help of Furthur/RatDog keyboardist Jeff Chimenti. After a short break, Greene, his band and Jeff Chimenti returned for another set of music with Lukas Nelson, who recently played Weir’s TRI studio and sat in with Furthur, on guitar. The musicians ran through a set of covers, including ‘One Way Out’ and ‘The Sky is Crying.’

Weir himself took the stage at the start of the evening’s third set. The birthday boy joined Greene, his band and Chimenti for a take on ‘Sugaree’ with Weir and Greene trading vocals. Then, Nelson closed the night with a solo acoustic set that included a number of Beatles and Neil Young covers.

Looking ahead, in December Bob Weir will deliver a series of solo performances across the western United States. Jackie Greene will share the bill on these dates. The tour will start off in San Diego, CA before ending in Monterey, CA. The full tour schedule appears below.
