Zomba Prison Project: I Will Not Stop Singing

J. Poet on November 9, 2016

Zomba prison is located in Malawi, the poorest nation on Earth. The inmates there live in poverty, often going without food for two or three days. Producer Ian Brennan and his wife, filmmaker Marilena Delli, visited the prison in 2013 and 2016 to record prisoners and officers performing together. This sequel to their first Grammy-nominated album, I Have No Everything Here, is just as powerful, with 14 poignant performances that often bring you close to tears. Despite their physical hardships, the inmates play gentle music, full of quiet hope. Elias Chimwali delivers the a cappella “Sister, Take Good Care of Your Husband” with a hushed intensity that taps into the African roots of the blues. Chisomo Chipembere’s “Ambush of the Slaves” is an uptempo tune, with rippling electric guitars, minimal percussion, lively singing and a sprightly whistled solo. The R&B/reggae hybrid “Leave My Daughter Alone” features a staccato electric guitar figure, a melodic bass line and sharp lead vocals by Vincent Saulos, with several women providing harmony vocals. Thomas Binamo uses impressive acoustic fingerpicking to deliver “I Will Never Stop Grieving for You, My Wife,” a lament leavened by the obvious love in the singer’s voice. Chikondi Salanje offers a bluesy, understated acoustic guitar riff on “I Will Not Return to Prison,” recorded a few days before he was finally released from Zomba.
