Zigaboo Modeliste: New Life

Self-released

In his third solo album, New Life, drummer and founding member of The Meters Joseph “Zigaboo” Modeliste gives us the revitalizing funk that we all need. It’s a joyful, carefree collection of upbeat dance songs and mellow R&B grooves. With the instrumental tracks, Zig conjures up The Meters’ sound – the memorable riff of “Ate Ball Waltz” floats on his head-bobbing backbeat, while “Tough Nuts” combines a bouncy, syncopated guitar part with a soulful organ breakdown. But New Life also demonstrates Zig’s ability to incorporate other styles into his music. From the bubbly poppiness of “Was Not Meant To Be” to the blade’s edge blues guitar solo in “New Life,” he supports it all with the backbone of his impeccably funky drumming.
