Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band: Funk Life
With a name like Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band, there really isn’t a question whether this group is going to have some fun. The title of their third studio release, Funk Life, is equally unambiguous. From the punchy horn hits that bust out of the gate on lead single and album opener “24/7,” the Booty Band are anything but bashful, whether it’s in their driving funk riffs, infectious repetition or vocalist Mary Frances’ positive and frank lyrics. The group’s ethos is perfectly conveyed on this short album, especially in the penultimate track “Mama Feelgood,” a female empowerment anthem originally sung by soul godmother Lyn Collins, and the title track, which starts with a group chant: “Said I can’t stop, I won’t stop, livin’ the funk, livin’ the funk life.” Frances claims that the album’s final track, “Living The Dream,” came to her in her sleep, hand delivered by the dream versions of George Clinton and Garry Shider. And there isn’t a doubt that the Booty Band owe a great deal to the lasting influence of P-Funk.
