WOLF!: 1-800-WOLF!

Throughout 1-800-WOLF, the sophomore album by the New York instrumental trio WOLF!, the band maintains a certain level of funkiness without ever emitting a single song that might actually be classified as funk. Lately of Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, bandleader and guitarist Scott Metzger was also a chief songwriter in the beloved, dormant (and likewise-capitalized) New York quartet RANA, and his old band’s Ween-loving eclecticism comes through on the disc’s 13 compact tunes, drawn together by a unified laid-back slyness. A handful of the group’s songs, including “Whiskey Mister” and the opening “Pork ‘n Slaw” recall classic mid-century R&B greasers, but it’s the wide range of other material that best highlights the considerable emotional range of Metzger’s guitar playing, from the low-key Spanish bolero of “You Are No Longer My Friend, My Friend” to the noir shuffle of “Tomatillo Verde.” Most intriguing are a trio of quiet late-album pieces, including the bayou sunset of “Bohemian Grove,” the prewar pop of “Oaxaca Ox” and the exquisite still-of-the-night vibe of “Denim Love Affair.” It’s not the funk that matters, anyway, but the cool.
