Sleeper guitar hero Ava Mendoza explores heady nebulae and dark stars galore on composer, bassist and shaman William Parker’s magnificent Mayan Space Station (AUM Fidelity). Following up his 10-volume Migration of Silence Into and Out of the Tone World (released earlier this year), Parker and longtime drumming crony Gerald Cleaver provide a solid rhythmic bulwark and tractor beams aplenty for Mendoza, who has a-thousand-and-one stories to tell as she drifts ever farther into the firmament. Highlights include the 15-minute title track and “Canyons of Light,” which blasts open the star gate with power-trio prismatics.
