Wadada Leo Smith: The Great Lakes Suites
A jazz composer of epic works such as 2012’s Ten Freedom Summers, trumpeter and multi-instrumentalist Wadada Leo Smith has assembled a band well worthy of his ambitions on his magnificent new The Great Lakes Suites. Saxophonist-flutist Henry Threadgill, drummer Jack DeJohnette and bassist John Lindberg set sail on six compositions over the course of 90 minutes. The weather can be calm or volatile, with change as the only constant. “Lake Superior” may deliver the finest soloing, while “Lake Erie” is almost eerily spacey. And although “Lake St. Clair” arrives in last position (as usual!), its mysteries are plumbed to the fullest.
