Ty Segall: Emotional Mugger
A lot of ink gets spilled about Ty Segall’s proclivity for churning out whatever comes into his head and making an album out of it—sometimes two or three a year, including his side projects. The thing is, they all tend to be really good; for someone so committed to pure output, Segall hasn’t lost the raw innocence and wacky headspace that elevated his 2008 self-titled debut to garage-classic status. In fact, Emotional Mugger, retains all the jagged rough edges, while coming across as a glam tribute (specifically to Marc Bolan) bent and braided through all manner of acid-rock lenses. “Like a bag of candy, I’ll give you pleasure,” he sings saucily on the first half of the title track (paired with the well-sequined “Leopard Priestess”). He’s doing his level best to conjure the androgynous time when bodysuits clashed with platform boots, overdriven guitars sounded like synths, and muscle cars tore up the road in a slow-motion dance of kaleidoscopic sparks. This is music that’s as visually suggestive as it is sonically arresting—pretty damn impressive for a guy who could just as easily have wound up toting a surfboard in his native Laguna Beach before the Bay Area claimed him as its own.
