The psychedelic desert funk on The Budos Band’s superlative third instrumental album refuses to sneak up on you. The punchy brass uncoils and pounces as the prowling bass and guitar lines weave above roiling percussion. These precise arrangements don’t compromise the album’s unpredictable moods. In “Budos Dirge,” maybe the funkiest funeral march ever written, a fractious electric organ pierces the meaty brass chart without denting the tune’s propulsion. Even the harmonized sensual menace between the bass and guitar in “Raja Haje” is disturbed, but not impeded, by the beckoning horns. A blend of ‘60s heist film mystique ( “Black Venom” ) and slow-churning doom-rock (The Beatles’ “Day Tripper” cover) complete III’s flavor.
