The Big Sleep: Nature Experiments

Frenchkiss
The Big Sleep, a Brooklyn, N.Y.-based duo formed of bassist/vocalist Sonya Balchandani and guitarist/vocalist Danny Barria, sounds larger than it theoretically should. The twosome builds vast psychedelic indie rock numbers that loom with layered heft. Nature Experiments succeeds the band’s 2008 disc Sleep Forever, expanding on that predecessor’s eclectic combination of various genres. On Nature Experiments,
the stylings tend away from those prior noise and drone rock elements, leaning further toward the melodic – particularly on tracks like “Ghosts In Bodies” and “Ace.” Still, the static is thick, the electric guitars are heavy with reverb and the songs twitch with instances of experimental clamor. Sonic Youth has been a logical past comparison for the band, but here, Balchandani and Barria moan and exhale with their own voices.
