The basic plot goes like this: The fenix has fucking rizen from the ashes of some once-fiery items that have settled at the base of the world’s mightiest and biggest mountain, which I am sure has yet to be discovered. There is only one duo that can so intimately explore every aspect of life, from licking “tasty cracks” to the importance of ecology in this fragile modern world. Plus, receiving BJs. And only one duo that taps into the inner mystical world of rock and roll and exposes it to us regulars. Tenacious D are that medium. Yes, certainly this is all true, but… Rize of the Fenix is not as good as the first D album. But you knew that already. That 2001 self-titled affair was up there with This Is Spinal Tap. It was that one that set perhaps an unattainable early high water mark for Kage and Jables (actors/ musicians Kyle Glass and Jack Black). But if you’re a silly-ass dude who digs a good giggle and doesn’t need all their jokes subtle and doesn’t need all their rock serious, then you’ll probably have a nice time here. You just won’t be replaying it a ton like that first D album. And stay away if you don’t find humor in your anus. Standouts include “The Ballad of Hollywood Jack and the Rage Kage,” “Low Hangin’ Fruit” and “Deth Starr.”
