San Francisco’s Tea Leaf Green have finally harnessed their considerable live mojo into a gorgeously sculpted studio counterpart that reflects the quintet’s bounteous creativity, instrumental dexterity and dedicated songwriting chops. In The Wake is an album in the classic sense; it is a wide-spectrum journey one takes knowing that steady hands will steer them through the shifting currents. This begs happy comparisons to Wilco, ‘70s David Bowie and Ween, where raw talent, increasing musical maturity and a largely unfiltered adventurous spirit inform each cut.
