Strangefolk: Live at The Capitol Theater

Bill Clifford on July 2, 2012

Self-released

The reunion of Strangefolk’s original lineup this past March – guitarist/vocalist Jon Trafton, guitarist/vocalist Reid Genauer, bassist/vocalist Erik Glocker and drummer Luke Smith – stirred interest its archived recordings. The remastered recording Live at The Capitol Theater captures Strangefolk at the renowned venue on Dec. 27, 1998, and, encapsulates what fans had known all along – that Strangefolk was one of the most inherently talented bands to arise from the early Northeast jamband scene. Songs such as “Rachel,” “Strange Ranger” and “Walnut” reveal brotherly-like harmonies and upbeat, sun-dappled melodies. “Neighbor” in particular, features Trafton on sinewy, electric guitar that ebbs and flows into a syncopated vocal jam that builds to a bubbling crescendo. Others, such as fan favorites “Chasing Away,” “Like You Anyway,” “Great Long While” and “So Far Gone” feature Strangefolk’s strengths: sweet harmonies, soulful, bluesy grooves and extended improvisation.
