Save Us From The Archon: Melancholia

While misery absolutely loves company, company generally prefers you to keep your sadness at arm’s length. So major kudos to guitarist Andrew Cresto for acknowledging his long battle with depression as the impetus behind Save Us From the Archon’s self-released instrumental head trip, Melancholia. The Pittsburgh instrumental quartet’s sixth album since 2012, Melancholia pinballs frantically between fractured-time motifs and brief respites. “Of Forgiveness” sounds like someone giving himself a severe talking-to, while “Trancing Nostalgia” resolves into tubular bells territory. Melancholy has rarely sounded quite so exuberant.
