For the band’s fourth studio album, Old Crow Medicine Show headed to Nashville, Tenn., to record Carry Me Back, their first studio album since 2008. The 12 tracks, nearly all of which
clock in at under three minutes, are rooted deeply in Appalachian folklore (the band got their footing in North Carolina and eventually relocated to Nashville) and mix evergreen references points ( “Ain’t It Enough” is Bob Dylan-esque in its timelessness) with songs that involve broader themes ( “We Don’t Grow Tobacco” tells a story from a different era). Though there isn’t another “Wagon Wheel” on Carry Me Back, “Half a Mile Down” is a standout: It has a more contemporary sound than the other tracks’ twangy, original stories.
