Noah Preminger Group: Zigsaw: Music of Steve Lambert

“Zigsaw,” the single composition heard on the Noah Preminger Group’s self-released Zigsaw: Music of Steve Lambert , begins with a tinkly tap of an electronic temple bell. From there, “Zigsaw” distends into 49 minutes of hyperactive jazz pleasure, toggling between the tune’s helixing theme and subsections devoted to vamps and free improvisations. The tenor saxophonist has never sounded more in control, or out on a limb, among an excellent band consisting of Jason Palmer (trumpet), John O’Gallagher (alto sax), Kris Davis (piano), Rudy Royston (drums), Kim Cass (bass) and Rob Schwimmer, whose Haken Continuum synth tinkles, drones, and fibrillates throughout this remarkable experiment in extended interplay.
