Neneh Cherry: Broken Politics

Anxiety—both high and low—disturbs the domestic waters of Neneh Cherry’s Broken Politics, which is how you know she’s paying attention. The personal and political consolidate in Cherry’s coolly delivered lines over stripped-down tracks created by Kieran Hebden (Four Tet). “It’s my politics, livin’ in the slow jam,” sings Cherry over a piano and vibraphone in “Synchronised Devotion,” a track in which she also notes that “My name is Neneh” and “I’m a Pisces.” She’s been blending jazz and hip-hop for longer than most, and Broken Politics marks, if anything, an elegant natural refinement of her signature sound.
