Nada Surf: You Know Who You Are

Nada Surf have stretched this trademark approach—a power-pop jangle built on saccharine choruses and wind-blown guitar strums—across two decades, standing firm through assorted rock trends. Even if prodded bya gun to his back, Matthew Caws couldn’t write a song any other way. But does he need to? There’s a comfort in that dependability, knowing that Nada’s hopeful yet melancholy hooks will always be there. The quartet hasn’t reinvented the wheel on their eighth album, but some intriguing new quirks elevate You Know Who You Are above business as usual. “You know, you know the feeling/ It starts with just a little tingling,” Caws sings on the bruising title track—and as those bright chords ring out, the line feels like a knowing wink from band to fan. But the hammer-on riffs pack extra muscle—perhaps the influence of former Guided By Voices guitarist Doug Gillard, who is now an official member following stints as a guest musician. Elsewhere, the newcomer elevates “Animal” with his country-tinged leads, adding pixie-dust magic to the psychedelic “Gold Sounds.” But You Know Who You Are is an appropriate title: Caws has never sounded more assured as a songwriter.
