Mogwai: Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will

Sub Pop
With the exception of this band’s 15 minutes of fame – featured in the 2006 Miami Vice soundtrack while Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx drive fancy speedboats, pursuing the biggest coke bust in South Florida history – Mogwai’s place in rock history is mostly as an influence on the steady wave of instrumental post-rock outfits that have popped up over the past decade. If you’re familiar with this Scottish quintet’s dramatic, score-like creations, then you won’t be disappointed with instrumental gems such as “Rano Pano” or “Death Rays,” which are both layered with the heavy electronic backdrops and ever-building explosive walls of sound that Mogwai has nearly trademarked. It’s the kind of material that lends itself perfectly to times when you just need to close your eyes and allow the subconscious to wander.
