Mike Zito: Gone To Texas

Sam D’Arcangelo on October 9, 2013

Gone To Texas gets its title from a saying among early 19th century pioneers, who would abandon their problems back East to forge a new life in the Spanish territory. That theme of running from past demons and finding redemption in a new land (and new people) defines this record—Mike Zito’s first with his new band, The Wheel. Musically and lyrically, it has the blues down. “Voices In Dallas” stands out as bleak tale of addiction and lost love, while “Don’t Think Cause You’re Pretty” shines with its gritty sound and classic soloing. Sonny Landreth and Delbert McLinton even appear on a couple of tunes. Some may be turned off by the lack of sonic variety, but this album has the blues in spades.
