Mike Flanigin: The Drifter

Ron Hart on February 29, 2016

For over a quarter of a century, Mike Flanigin and his distinctive style on the Hammond B3 has supported some of the hottest names in Texas. And many of those famous friends pay it back on the keyboardist’s long-overdue solo debut, The Drifter. Produced by Flanigin himself and engineered by Spoon’s Jim Eno, these 10 songs are a wellspring of ideas and styles rooted in vintage Lone Star bar boogie. Throughout The Drifter, their stylistic excursions range from orchestral jazz-pop (the Kat Edmonson-assisted “Nina”) to heart-stopping soul (“Stop The World,” featuring an stellar vocal turn from guitarist Gary Clark Jr.) to simmering blues duels with his former bosses (“All Nite Long” with Jimmie Vaughan and the Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown-penned title cut featuring ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons). Further excursions into gospel, garage rock and Lightnin’ Hopkins-esque folk-guitar savvy help to make The Drifter one of the most exciting releases in recent memory.
