MGMT: MGMT

People expected that MGMT would continue their musical manifest destiny on their third and self-titled full length, but this time they’ve extended their reach even further to source new psychedelic material. Recorded without their touring band, Andrew VanWyngarten and Ben Goldwasser are left to their consistently expectation-defying impulses—resulting in a varied, undulating collection that’s as darkly profound as it is complex and oblique. Sometimes a studio free-for-all with only a loose thread of melody (“An Orphan of Fortune”) and at other times a tribal fever dream that requires some contemplation (“A Good Sadness”), MGMT is heady and significantly involved. It’s hardly their poppiest or catchiest work—some tracks border on soundscapes, and there’s often a singular dissonance amid the kaleidoscopic array of synth textures and weaving vocal melodies. These songs are unified in their overt otherworldliness but diverse in sentiments, styles and general effectiveness.
