Metallica: Hardwired…to Self-Destruct

Metallica would have to veer pretty far off the rails to disappoint with a new album. The band, now 10 albums deep with Hardwired…to Self-Destruct, has crafted a signature style of grand, accessible metal over the past several decades and the musicians never fail to meet the expectations they’ve set for themselves. It’s that consistency so many of their others, are primed for an arena stage. So much so that you can almost see the pyrotechnics going off as you head bangs along.  that sets Metallica apart from so many of their peers, proving that delivering repeated quality is a skill, not a given. This album is the band’s first studio effort since 2008’s Death Magnetic and the musicians have enlisted Greg Fidelman, who engineered and mixed that prior album, to produce the 12 tracks here. The riffs are heavy, the beats are throbbing and frontman James Hetfield sounds as fierce as ever, particularly on surging rocker “Atlas, Rise!” and pointed, growling number “ManUNkind.” Metallica doesn’t rush through any of the songs, pacing the aggression and grit to ensure that each track gets its musical due. Mid-tempo thumper “Am I Savage?” takes its time to unfold over six and a half minutes, allowing the band to roll through each note with maximum fervor. The closing number, seven-minute “Spit out the Bone,” amps up the vigor, giving drummer Lars Ulrich the chance to fully show off before descending into a static-laced ball of electricity that finds a real melody despite its instrumental chaos. These songs, like so many of their others, are primed for an arena stage. So much so that you can almost see the pyrotechnics going off as you headbang along.
