Mattias Uneback: Voyage Beneath the Sea

A quiet storm is brewing across the great waters on Mattias Uneback’s mostly tranquil Voyage Beneath the Sea (Subliminal Sounds), an exotica-fueled meditation on all things oceanic. A member of Swedish exotica ensemble Ìxtahuele, Uneback brings a cinematic sensibility to his impressionistic aquatic meditations. The ocean’s depths represent a kind of psychedelic inner space that bubbles along placidly, especially during the slow yet increasingly anxious drift of “Sargasso.” Elsewhere, Uneback whips up a stormy froth (“Triton, God of the Sea”), evokes Martin Denny’s quiet village (“Silent World”) and sketches the life of a starfish.
