Matt Valentine (MV & EE, Tower Recordings, Wet Tuna, etc.) establishes a sonic beachhead on Preserves (Beyond Beyond Is Beyond), an eight-years-in-the-making cornucopia of echoing, reverberant and downright lobe-smashing space-rock of maximum dankness. J. Mascis, P.G. Six and Ryan Jewell are among the contributors to the galactic festivities, which features a trio of segueing suites. Big rock riffs bleed through the miasma in “Cosmic Debris,” while a lonely sitar offers a through line connecting “Analog Love” and “Crystal Mava.” Shimmering between the sounds of downloading wetware and apes in space, Preserves marks a return to the early era of psychedelia at its most anarchic and experimental.
