The remarkable and bewitching guitarist Mary Halvorson has never offered herself in as much fullness as on the double album Code Girl. Over 90 minutes, Halvorson augments her Thumbscrew rhythm section—drummer Tomas Fujiwara and bassist Michael Formanek—with trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire and vocalist Amirtha Kidambi, who sings Halvorson’s terse, elliptical lyrics. “I have here in my rotation/ It is not predictable, my mind/ Potential to deal a dangerous lie,” sings Kidambi in “My Mind I Find in Time.” The real action, however, is in the stunningly original interactions between Halvorson, a marvel of astringent naturalism and unearthly processes, and the elegantly sputtering Akinmusire.
