Mariachi El Bronx: (III)
Assuming the alter ego Mariachi El Bronx turned out to be the best move that hardcore group The Bronx have ever made. The band members proved that it’s impossible to pigeonhole musicians into one genre by reimagining themselves as a mariachi outfit and simultaneously releasing very different music under both names. (III) is the third effort from this incarnation of the Los Angeles musicians, juxtaposed with The Bronx’s 2013 self-titled fourth album. By now the group has mastered this style of music enough to innovate within it, particularly on tracks like “Sticks And Stones,” which pairs the mariachi sounds with a folky alt-country croon. The boisterous “Raise The Dead” showcases impressively fast-plucked acoustic guitar, almost instantaneously transporting you to Mexico. The musicians draw from classic, traditional sounds, as usual, but the album sounds resolutely modern in tone. It’s hard to believe that Mariachi El Bronx exists as something else entirely half of the time.
