Keller Williams with More Than a Little: Funk
As much a commentary on ‘70s funk styles as it is a tribute, this record finds Keller Williams and company mixing originals and covers in a live setting. Since Williams’ style is too mannered to come off as convincingly “street,” Funk works best when it puts some ironic distance between performer and song and follows the humorous tradition of artists like Bootsy Collins and Rick James. In fact, the rollicking cover of James’ “Mary Jane,” featuring the group’s two female vocalists, is a highlight. A loose-limbed version of the goofy mock sex anthem “I Told You I Was Freaky” by the New Zealand jokesters Flight of the Conchords sets the tone as the opening number. Funk falls flat only when the band revives serious-minded tunes by Talking Heads and the Grateful Dead. But the balance leans toward fun, showing that Williams has picked up on the spirit of the artists he admires, not just on their affectations.
