Jim James: Tribute To 2
In the days following George Harrison’s 2001 death, Jim James grieved the only way that made sense: through song. Armed with an acoustic guitar and cheap reel-to-reel, the My Morning Jacket frontman quickly reinterpreted a handful of the former Beatle’s most beloved songs, reducing anthems like “Long, Long, Long” and “Love You To” to ghostly laments on Tribute To. Sixteen years later, James is back at the covers game with Tribute To 2, a pseudo-sequel – but only in methodology, not in mourning. Instead of deliberately honoring the dead, the singer-songwriter simply reworks some of his favorite songs for the hell of it—from Elvis Presley’s gospel ballad “Crying in the Chapel” to Emerson, Lake and Palmer’s folk-prog standard “Lucky Man.” The track list is dizzying enough to showcase James’ diverse taste, and it’s fun tracing the influence from these tunes to his own catalog: Take his spaced-out, vintage soul version of The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds meditation “I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times,” which could have slotted in smoothly on his latest solo LP, 2016’s Eternally Even. Whether he’s digging for deep cuts (jazz crooner Al Bowlly’s “Midnight, the Stars and You,” outfitted with jaunty saloon piano and creepy detuned vocals) or paying homage to the obvious giants (a twangy take on Bob Dylan’s “I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight,” highlighted by woozy steel-guitar), James consistently reshapes the material to suit his psychedelic headspace.
