Fuzz: Fuzz

Richard Gehr on October 31, 2013

Nostalgia comes in all sorts of wonderfully specialized flavors these days. The meth-fueled sludge of Vincebus Eruptum-era Blue Cheer, for example, is reanimated in Fuzz, the perfectly named young California trio consisting of Roland Cosio (bass), Charlie Moothart (guitar), and prolific garage-psych
wunderkind Ty Segall (drums, vocals). Moothart has Leigh Stephens’s overdriven (and underappreciated) sound down pat on Fuzz’s eponymous In The Red debut, a half-hour of unironic existential caterwaul (e.g., “What’s In My Head?”) that switches out the Cheer’s blues templates in favor of nods to Sabbath, Hawkwind, Hendrix, Mountain and their pileous ilk.
