Explosions in the Sky & David Wingo: Prince Avalanche

Temporary Residence
Austin instrumentalists Explosions in the Sky continue to showcase their rank alongside Clint Mansell and Mark Mothersbaugh as one of the most imaginative and exploratory acts in modern film scoring with the soundtrack to Pineapple Express director David Gordon Green’s new Prince Avalanche. Set in the summer of 1988, the movie follows the friendship between two state workers (played by Emile Hirsch and Paul Rudd) who are repainting a fire-damaged highway in Central Texas. The Explosions’ subtle, airy collaboration with fellow score composer David Wingo (Mud, Take Shelter) does this Tribeca Film Festival favorite atmospheric justice. They deliver 15 tiny electric-acoustic minuets from the comfort of their living rooms, reflecting the asphalt and forestry of the characters’ surroundings, and standing as some of the most beautiful music either artist has offered yet. No doubt, it would be great to see the quietude of Prince Avalanche factor into the next proper Explosions in the Sky LP.
