In South Africa, if Dumama + Kechou’s Buffering Juju (Mushroom Hour Half-Hour) is any indication, then things are strange indeed. The German-South African duo deploy their self-described “nomadic future folk”—a blend of percussion, electronics, vocals and local free-jazz guest stars—to relate the mystical journey of a woman’s liberation. Buffering Juju has the three-dimensional, audio-vérité presence of Pink Floyd and the cyclical, not to mention psychedelic, inevitability of all the better epic tales of transformation.
