Dr. Dog: B-Room
During the course of their recording career, Dr. Dog has slowly polished their indie rock sound, adding a noticeable gleam to the production on more recent releases. B-Room, a follow-up to 2012’s Be The Void, opens with introspective subtlety on “The Truth.” The moody track doesn’t exactly set the tone for the rest of the disc, but offers an indication of where the Philly musicians find themselves on this album. From boisterous rocker “Broken Heart” to twanging
acoustic number “Phenomenon,” the group keeps the instrumentation aptly sparse, including only as many sounds as necessary to convey the emotional tone of the song. The music rises and falls throughout, but centers on issues of the heart. “Love” is a lush, indie track that reverberates with lingering
hope and the eerie glow of “Twilight” generates a lovely, aching mood. It’s clear that the slow evolution from album to album has urged Dr. Dog to a more refined and emotionally resonate place.
