Cyril Neville: Magic Honey
Cyril Neville has once again proven himself as a force to be reckoned with on Magic Honey, his first solo release in four years. The album finds Neville
crooning over an energetic blend of blues and funk, with the occasional whirling guitar freakout from Cranston Clements. Whether lambasting the power of business interests (“Money And Oil”) or singing about suspicious love (“Another Man”), Neville always finds a way to get his point across. The record even leaves the confines of the New Orleans sound for a few songs, branching out into reggae (“Slow Motion”) and a pleasantly surprising Rush cover (“Working Man”). However, the first three tracks might be the best, especially the perfectly titled “Swamp Funk,” which features a cameo from Dr. John.
