Cold War Kids: L.A. Divine

The best Cold War Kids songs exist on the thrilling verge of collapse—bashed-out rhythms, somersaulting guitars and Nathan Willett’s wild, swinging vocals dive-bombing through theatrical melodies. It’s indie-rock blasted to the rafters, and all the moving pieces somehow coexist, fusing into a whole that’s simultaneously funky and emotional. On their sixth album, L.A. Divine, Cold War Kids tighten up a bit and tone down the unpredictability, but it’s easy to look over those changes as Willett delivers some of the more satisfying hooks of his career. First single “Love Is Mystical” finds the band at its absolute best. The song stomps along with pounded keys and a pulsing bassline until the chorus sets everything into a dark, explosive march. Willett belts like he’s channeling the Holy Spirit: “Love is mystical, love will break the chains…give you the power to believe again.” Elsewhere, the band adds a pop shine to the formula. “Invincible” has the same shimmering, indie-rock earworm potential as anything by Passion Pit or even Vampire Weekend. And on “So Tied Up,” the band delivers a down and dirty soul jam featuring howling vocals from Bishop Briggs. Still, the element of bluesy danger apparent on breakthrough Robbers & Cowards is largely lacking in this trip through LA, with a few too many slow, atmospheric tunes that seem to turn to late-era U2 for inspiration. Divine? Not quite. But inarguably good.
