Charles Lloyd New Quartet: Passin’ Thru

On Passin’ Thru, Charles Lloyd and his New Quartet revisit material the saxophonist-flutist debuted a half-century ago with a spunky little group that introduced pianist Keith Jarrett and drummer Jack DeJohnette to the world. His decade-old New Quartet—filled out by Jason Moran (piano), Reuben Rogers (bass) and Eric Harland (drums)—isn’t any less awesome, whether locking into an 18-minute “Dream Weaver” vamp-a-thon, exploring the afrodelia of “Tagore on the Delta” or supporting Lloyd at his most spiritual in “Shiva Prayer.”
