Caterina Barbieri: Ecstatic Computation

Our robot masters frolic amid the exhilarating patterns, repetitions and refractions of Ecstatic Computation (Editions Mego), Italian composer Caterina Barbieri’s second album of analog electronic exploits. The crystalline structures of “Spine of Desire” evoke metallic memories of ‘80s horror-film soundtracks; the LSD-inspired motorik machinations of Kraftwerk echo through “Closest Approach to Your Orbit”; and baroque-flavored voices and keyboards ripple forward and backward in “Arrows of Time.” “Fantas,” which dominates the first third of this contemplative yet compact work, deploys alien signals and complexly sequenced premonitions of an increasingly mechanized future, an artificial counter-intelligence and other inevitable dystopias.
