Butch Walker: Afraid Of Ghosts
It’s been four years since Butch Walker’s last album, The Spade, and the musician/producer has spent the time making a deeply personal, affectingly lovely album. Walker tapped Ryan Adams to produce the songs and the combination is dead on, resulting in acoustic-rock numbers led by intense emotional narratives that search for sincere meaning. Walker wrote the album in response to the death of his father and the lyrics grapple with both life and death. It’s more cathartic than sad, particularly on the bluesy title track and “Father’s Day,” a hushed ballad that dials back the instrumentation to showcase the sentiment in Walker’s voice. As the album unfolds, it’s clear that Walker not only means every word he sings, but he’s also considered the meaning of each one. He has more questions than answers, like most of us, but these remarkably genuine songs feel like the right place to pose them.
