Bump: Broken Fix

Matt Inman on February 17, 2016

Bump are a relatively new trio consisting of latter-day Ominous Seapods guitarist Todd Pasternack, bassist Angela Ford and drummer Gregory Nash. Despite having been together for just a little over a year at this point, the three mesh well on their debut album, Broken Fix, bringing a wealth of experience from other bands to create a cohesive unit that excels in both straightforward songwriting and loose improvisation. And it’s really in the latter where Bump shines. Listeners get their first taste of the jam potential of this trio with “Wrecking Ball,” a pop ballad voiced by Ford that gives way to a vocal chant and revs up to a percussively funky prog jam. Tight harmonies and soft melodies abound on the record, as in “How Could You Go So Low,” which features a feather-light, three-part harmony and a sparse, slow-burn guitar solo break that showcases Bump’s ability to settle into a hypnotizing, smooth groove.
