Superette: Superette
Bassist Chris Lightcap may be a latecomer to the rock racket, but he makes up for lost time with Superette, whose debut album of that very name (on Royal Potato Family) blends Afro-pop, surf sounds and sci-fi rock into a black-diamond run of electrified fun. Nels Cline guests alongside guitarists Jonathan Goldberger and Curtis Hasselbring, while John Medeski adds special keyboard unguents to Lightcap and drummer Dan Rieser’s excitable rhythms. Lightcap— who more often plays with jazzers like pianist Craig Taborn and singer Regina Carter—shines on Africanized surf-rock numbers like “Djali” and the buttery slo-mo instrumental versions of Neil Young’s “Birds” and Skip Spence’s cult-fave “All Come to Meet Her.”
