It’s difficult to say what defines a jamband these days but for the Brooklyn via Denver psych-rock quartet Woodsman, there’s little question as to whether they embody the term’s original meaning. “We went on tour strictly as an improv band right when we started,” says guitarist Trevor Peterson. “Musically, we’re all about taking risks.” Influenced more by the meditative drones of ‘70s German experimentalists like Amun Duul II and Can than the Grateful Dead, Woodsman explore organic, mostly instrumental soundscapes that often unfold like extended sound quests. “Our whole thing is to create this environment that we can all move around in and just create a mood that listeners can exist in,” says Peterson. “We want our live show to feel like an experience. We want something that people can walk away from and feel like they’ve been somewhere – that their mind has been somewhere.”
